- ‘Rapture’ hits Trump’s State Fair as absolutely no fairgoers spotted at big 250th celebration (irishstar.com)
The Trump administration’s Great American State Fair has officially kicked off on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., but reports indicate attendance has been light since its opening last week. The 16-day event, running through July 10, features more than 150 exhibits representing all 56 states and territories, a towering 110-foot Ferris wheel, a rodeo, and various other attractions.
Despite the fanfare, the fair’s opening day on Thursday saw modest crowds. On Monday, social media users humorously speculated whether a “rapture” had emptied the fairgrounds, referencing a religious belief in the end times. Journalist Aaron Rupar shared clips from Fox News showing sparse attendance during live broadcasts, noting that there appeared to be more anchors than visitors present.
The Freedom 250 initiative, the public-private partnership behind the event’s organization, confirmed the fair is free and open daily starting at 10 a.m. The early Monday broadcast that showed nearly empty grounds was filmed before official opening hours, which may explain the lack of visitors in those clips.
Still, multiple news outlets have described the overall turnout as limited. The Washington Post observed “large swaths of freshly manicured lawn untouched” amid the rows of white pavilions, while the Associated Press reported only small groups arriving and passing quickly through security.
Video footage from the U.S. Navy Band’s opening day performance showed attendees seated on the grass but with plenty of open space remaining.
Social media users didn’t hold back in mocking the sparse crowds, with comments pointing out the noticeable lack of visitors in official footage. Meanwhile, former President Trump took to Truth Social early Monday to praise the event, declaring it “packed with happy people” and questioning whether former Presidents Obama or Biden could have pulled off such a feat.
The fair has also faced challenges with performers withdrawing due to concerns over the event’s political ties. Rapper Young MC and country star Martina McBride both announced their decisions not to perform, citing changes in the event’s nature that conflicted with their expectations of a nonpartisan celebration of all 50 states.
Adding to the confusion, it’s important to note that Freedom 250, the organizer of the Great American State Fair, is separate from America250, the nonprofit supporting the official U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission established by Congress to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. The two entities operate independently despite similar names.
As the fair continues, organizers will likely hope for stronger attendance and a smoother path forward amid the mixed reception and political undercurrents surrounding the event.
