Tragic Crocodile Attack Claims Life Near Puerto Vallarta Resort

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – A young man tragically lost his life last Friday night after being dragged into the water by a crocodile near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, local authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred at a beach close to Marina Vallarta, a popular tourist area. Officials described the event as a “highly regrettable, unusual and isolated” case, prompting swift coordination among municipal, state, and federal agencies.

The victim, a 28-year-old visitor from Mexico City, was pulled underwater before bystanders and emergency personnel could reach him. His body was recovered the following morning by Mexican Navy personnel. Authorities also captured the crocodile near the site of the attack.

Officials emphasized that American crocodiles are native to coastal ecosystems in the region, commonly found in estuaries, canals, and other water bodies. With the rainy season beginning in June, rising water levels can bring these reptiles closer to beaches and inhabited areas.

“The risk of dangerous encounters with crocodiles is rare,” the government stated, highlighting ongoing efforts by the Human-Crocodile Working Group-a coalition involving multiple government levels, academia, civil society, and the tourism sector-to monitor and manage crocodile presence.

Since the attack, authorities have increased surveillance along beaches and waterways known for crocodile activity. Visitors are urged to heed warning signs, follow instructions from Civil Protection officials, and avoid entering water near estuaries or canals, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours.

Previous crocodile incidents in the area include bites sustained by two Colorado tourists in 2022 and an attack on an 18-year-old U.S. tourist in 2021, both near the Marriott resort.

Researchers advise keeping children and pets away from crocodile habitats and refraining from swimming in murky or potentially unsafe waters.

Marriott Puerto Vallarta has yet to comment on the incident. Authorities encourage anyone spotting a crocodile to report it immediately to local officials.
