LeRoy Irvin, a distinguished two-time Pro Bowl cornerback for the Los Angeles Rams, has passed away at the age of 68.

Eric Dickerson, Hall of Fame running back and former teammate of Irvin’s with the Rams, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, describing the news as “devastating.” Los Angeles journalist Eric Geller, who had the opportunity to work with Irvin post-retirement, revealed on X that Irvin had been battling throat cancer. Further details regarding his passing have not been disclosed.

Irvin was celebrated not only for his exceptional skills on the field but also for his vibrant personality and friendship. “LeRoy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy,” Dickerson said.

“Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

He shared a photo of the two together at an event supporting Dickerson’s foundation.

Irvin entered the NFL in 1980 when the Rams selected him in the third round of the draft out of Kansas. He spent the majority of his 11-year career with Los Angeles, finishing with a single season at the Detroit Lions.

Renowned for his lockdown coverage, Irvin earned first-team All-Pro honors in 1981 after recording three interceptions, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and his first career sack over 16 games. Known for his playmaking ability, he totaled 35 interceptions in his career, including five in 1984 with two returned for touchdowns – the league lead in interception return scores that year.

His consistent excellence was recognized with Pro Bowl selections in 1985 and 1986, the latter season also earning him first-team All-Pro honors again. In 1985, he was named second-team All-Pro.

The Rams organization paid tribute on social media, stating, “We mourn the loss of Rams Legend LeRoy Irvin. We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Over his career with the Rams, Irvin amassed 34 interceptions (five returned for touchdowns), nine forced fumbles, and 13 fumble recoveries, cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s standout defensive backs.
