During a routine fishing outing in Telos Township, Maine, a couple’s quick thinking helped save a moose calf from a charging bear. Todd and Elvia Malcolm spotted a female moose near the woods and stopped their pickup truck, hoping to capture a photo. However, the situation quickly escalated when a bear and the moose calf suddenly rushed toward their vehicle.
Recognizing the danger, Todd Malcolm didn’t hesitate. “I knew what I had to do and I just did it,” he told The Associated Press.
He put the truck in gear and accelerated to place the vehicle between the bear and the vulnerable calf. His move successfully scared the bear off, which veered off the road and disappeared back into the forest.
Elvia Malcolm, watching from inside the truck, said her heart was pounding. “I did not want to witness the bear catching the calf,” she shared. Fortunately, the calf made it safely past their truck and was soon reunited with its mother.
Despite the tense moment, Elvia managed to snap several photos through the windshield, although she was careful not to leave the safety of the vehicle. After the dramatic encounter, the couple resumed their fishing trip, relieved to see the moose family safe and sound.
