Residents of Guam are preparing for the arrival of Super Typhoon Bavi, which threatens to bring devastating conditions to the U.S. territory in the Western Pacific. Currently, Bavi’s sustained winds reach 145 mph, classifying it as a powerful Category 4 storm. However, forecasts indicate the typhoon could intensify to winds of up to 175 mph by Saturday afternoon local time.
The storm is expected to pass between Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands between Sunday night and Monday morning local time. At that point, winds near the eye could reach approximately 165 mph, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, posing significant risks to the region.
Alongside the extreme winds, heavy rainfall totaling 5 to 10 inches is anticipated from Sunday through Wednesday, raising the threat of major flooding. Additionally, waves as high as 30 feet may impact coastal areas.
The National Weather Service has urged residents to take immediate precautions, secure their homes, stay tuned for official updates, and be prepared to evacuate if directed. Authorities emphasize the importance of early preparation to minimize the storm’s potentially catastrophic impact on the islands.
