Two young children have been left orphaned following the tragic kidnapping and murder of their mother, Brandi Reynolds, a postal worker in Hays, North Carolina.
Brandi, 35, was found dead on June 26 while carrying out her mail delivery route. Though she often shared glimpses of her family life online, a more complex reality emerged after her death.
Brandi’s husband, Brent Reynolds, who passed away in a car accident just days before Christmas last year, had been arrested alongside her in 2022 in connection with a drug operation at their rural Wilkes County home. Court records reveal the couple faced charges related to the possession and sale of controlled substances, including marijuana, fentanyl, and heroin.
Authorities discovered drug paraphernalia, packaging materials, and scales at the residence. Brandi was sentenced to 30 months of supervised probation in May 2023, while Brent received a 36-month sentence. Tragically, Brent died in a single-vehicle crash while still serving his probation, having not worn a seatbelt when his truck went off the road and overturned.
Only six months after Brent’s death, Brandi was kidnapped and fatally shot, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call around 4:16 p.m. on June 26 at a home on Monteith Acres in Hays, where they found Brandi deceased.
William Craig Durham, 56, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder. He appeared in court on June 29. A relative of Brandi’s noted that Durham had previously threatened her and unlawfully entered her home, though investigators have not confirmed whether Brandi and Durham knew each other.
The case remains under active investigation, led jointly by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
