Visitors Call MAGA-Backed State Fair Lame and Confusing

Visitors to the MAGA-supported Great American State Fair remain divided in their opinions, even as attendance and exhibits have generally improved since the event’s opening.

One consistent criticism is the absence of traditional state fair attractions. Instead, the fair features a replica of President Donald Trump’s “Arc de Trump,” which several attendees reported appeared to be leaking a yellowish liquid, alongside a large Ferris wheel as the main draws. When asked if the Freedom 250 fair met their expectations, Ester Kerstgans and her husband expressed some disappointment over the limited offerings.

“We have a different expectation about a fair,” said Kerstgans, 55. “We thought there would be more rides.”

She compared this event to fairs back home in the Netherlands, where rides and outdoor food stands are plentiful and the atmosphere is more open. Additionally, Kerstgans noted that fairs she attended abroad typically enjoy cooler weather, contrasting sharply with the current extreme heat warning in Washington, D.C.

Despite these reservations, both Kerstgans and her husband were pleased by the number of visitors. “I think it’s great,” Kerstgans said. “I’m glad to see a lot of people because it’s nice to see all the states represented.”

Federal employee Nate Eeps, attending for the first time, also commented positively on the turnout. “From what I’ve seen, there’s a pretty good crowd,” he said.

“People have been trying to get in and check things out all day.” Eeps, 35, plans to return later in the week.

Virginia native Ali Sian, a repeat visitor, shared his enthusiasm as well. “Today has the highest turnout I’ve seen,” he noted, attributing the crowd to the holiday timing on July 3rd.

He praised the organizers for providing free water stations, a welcome relief in the heat, and complimented the friendly atmosphere. “Everyone’s smiling, welcoming, and thanking visitors-it’s definitely a 10 out of 10,” Sian said.

He added that weekend travel likely contributed to the increased attendance.

Not all visitors, however, were impressed. On opening day, some attendees expressed confusion and dissatisfaction with the fair’s scale and offerings.

Alicia, who traveled from Dallas, Texas, found the event underwhelming. “It seems a lot smaller compared to fairs back home,” she said.

“Dallas has hundreds of booths and plenty of rides-you know exactly what to expect.” She described the lack of clear signage and familiar attractions as disorienting.

“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do yet,” Alicia admitted with a nervous laugh. “I’m waiting to explore more and see if there are booths or other things to check out.”

She hesitated to call the fair “lame” but acknowledged her high expectations for Washington, D.C.’s 250th anniversary celebration. “I was hoping for something big, but I don’t see it yet.”

As the Great American State Fair continues, it remains a point of contention among attendees, balancing between enthusiastic supporters and those longing for a more traditional fair experience.
