South Carolina Parents Charged in Connection with Disappearance and Suspected Death of 4-Year-Old Daughter

AIKEN, S.C. – Authorities have charged Johmarea Harris, 23, and Michilae Herring, 22, with homicide by child abuse in the suspected death of their 4-year-old daughter, Javeayah Harris. Despite an ongoing search, the child’s body has yet to be found, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The case came to light after the mother reported Javeayah missing late Tuesday evening, stating she last saw her daughter about 30 minutes earlier near a chicken coop in their backyard. However, police investigations revealed evidence suggesting the child had likely been deceased for at least a month prior to the report. The mother also faces charges for filing a false police report.

Sheriff Marty Sawyer Jr. described the situation as one of the most difficult of his 36-year career. “Our investigation and evidence lead us to believe 4-year-old Javeayah Harris is deceased,” he said.

“It is the outcome we all feared. Sadly, it was already too late to save her when the 911 call came in on June 30th.”

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, continue to conduct extensive search efforts beyond Aiken County in hopes of locating Javeayah’s remains. Sheriff Sawyer emphasized the importance of bringing her home and providing closure to the community.

Several neighbors expressed concern prior to the investigation, reporting signs of neglect despite the child being fed and clothed. Those who knew Javeayah remember her as a bright and friendly little girl who enjoyed Minnie Mouse and chasing chickens.

Both parents are currently held without bond at Aiken County Jail and may face additional charges as the investigation progresses. Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the evidence but remain committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this tragic case.
