Father Dies After Shooting in Dublin That May Have Been a Tragic Mistake

Additional Coverage:

Authorities in South Dublin are investigating the tragic shooting death of Mark Cullen, a 39-year-old father who died after being shot in what is believed to be a punishment shooting that went horribly wrong.

Mr. Cullen, originally from Shankill, had been released from prison just two weeks prior to the incident.

Police say the fatal shooting occurred early Sunday morning on Patrician Park, a quiet residential street in Dun Laoghaire. Investigators believe that Mr.

Cullen was shot once in the leg during a prearranged meeting, but the attacker did not intend to kill him. Instead, the bullet severed an artery, causing rapid blood loss and resulting in Mr.

Cullen’s death within minutes.

“In as much as a shooting can be accidental, this appears to be the case here,” a source told reporters. Officers are exploring multiple angles, including whether Mr. Cullen’s death was the result of a punishment shooting gone wrong or an altercation that escalated unexpectedly.

Though Mr. Cullen was not considered a major criminal figure, he was known to have ties to a local crime gang involved in drug activity at a relatively low level. He had been a repeat offender and was recently released after serving time related to producing an article.

The Gardaí have sealed off the area and launched a comprehensive investigation. Road closures remain in effect around Kill Avenue and Glenageary Road Upper as forensic teams examine the scene. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information or dash-cam footage from near Kill Avenue between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. on July 5 to come forward.

Local residents expressed shock and sadness at the shooting. Irene Hayden, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years, described the area as typically quiet and said the incident has left families feeling unsettled. “It is scary that something like this could happen so close to home,” she said.

Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph echoed the community’s sentiment, noting this was the first gun-related killing in the Republic since May 2024. He described the incident as a profound shock to a peaceful neighborhood.

The Gardaí continue to urge anyone with relevant information to contact Dun Laoghaire Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line as the investigation progresses.
