- The 10 most livable cities in the world (businessinsider.com)
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has unveiled its latest global ranking of the world’s most livable cities, assessing 173 urban centers based on five key criteria: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Leading the pack once again is Copenhagen, which retains its position as the most livable city worldwide.
Ana Nicholls, director of industry analysis at the EIU, attributes Copenhagen’s top ranking to its balanced excellence across all categories rather than dominance in any single area. Last year, Copenhagen overtook Vienna for the top spot, and both cities continue to achieve perfect scores in categories like education and infrastructure. Notably, Copenhagen maintains a flawless score for stability, reflecting a low prevalence of crime and other safety concerns, while Vienna leads in healthcare with a perfect rating.
The EIU report highlights that the highest-ranking cities consistently achieve perfect scores in education and nearly perfect scores in healthcare. Most of these cities also score 95 or above in stability, with the majority of the top ten receiving perfect marks in this category.
While Zurich experienced a decline due to a drop in culture and environment scores, it still ranks within the top ten. Tokyo made a notable ascent into the top ten, a significant achievement given the challenges typically faced by large, densely populated cities, such as higher crime rates and infrastructure demands, as Nicholls points out.
Despite strong showings, no U.S. cities made it into the top tier. Regionally, Western Europe leads the rankings, followed by North America.
