A Connecticut family witnessed a remarkable display of courage from their dog over the weekend when it bravely intervened to protect a young child from an approaching black bear.
Home security footage captured by Jeffrey Tazzara shows a young boy standing in the driveway when a black bear suddenly charges toward him at full speed. As the boy retreats, the family’s husky springs into action, running across the yard to place itself between the bear and the child.
The dog circles behind the bear, effectively chasing it off. Startled, the bear quickly veers away and slips under a boat parked nearby.
Tazzara shared the footage with Storyful, confirming the incident occurred at his Connecticut residence on Saturday. He noted, “Our dog always positions herself between strangers and the kids, but you wonder what would happen if she truly needed to protect us.
Now we know.” He joked that the heroic husky would surely be rewarded with a well-deserved T-bone steak.
Connecticut has seen a rise in black bear populations over recent decades, leading to more frequent encounters near homes, according to the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The agency emphasizes that bears generally avoid human contact and will move on if left undisturbed. They recommend residents remove food sources like bird feeders to deter bears from approaching properties.
For those who do come across a black bear, the department advises observing from a distance, never feeding or attracting the animal, and reporting sightings to wildlife officials to ensure safety for both people and bears.
