Conor McGregor Prepares UFC Comeback After Five Years of Injury Recovery

Additional Coverage:

Conor McGregor is preparing for a highly anticipated return to the UFC Octagon after recovering from a serious injury sustained in his last fight. The Irish MMA star will face former featherweight champion Max Holloway in a welterweight bout scheduled for July 11 at UFC 329, held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After a five-year break from competition, McGregor has adopted a fresh mindset heading into this matchup, reportedly committing to strict discipline, including abstinence, in his training camp. Despite the excitement surrounding his comeback, questions linger about how well he can perform following such an extended absence from the sport.

McGregor was initially set to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303 but withdrew just two weeks before the event due to a fractured pinky toe sustained in training. His last competitive appearance was at UFC 264 in July 2021, where he faced Dustin Poirier in their trilogy fight.

In that bout, McGregor started aggressively, landing multiple punches and kicks before Poirier managed to take him down. Near the end of the first round, as McGregor moved to strike, his left leg gave way, causing him to collapse.

The referee stopped the fight, awarding Poirier a TKO victory due to a doctor’s stoppage. Medical examinations revealed that McGregor had broken both his left tibia and fibula.

The 37-year-old underwent extensive orthopedic surgery, which included the insertion of a metal rod through his shinbone, along with a metal plate and screws to secure the fibula. The procedure lasted over three hours, followed by six weeks on crutches and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

In a recent interview with Nate Burleson, McGregor reflected on his recovery, embracing the titanium rod now permanently part of his leg. “It’s been a difficult few years with the injury recovery.

I’m fully, fully healed,” he said. “There is a titanium rod down the knee into the ankle and it’s solid.

I’m Terminator now, that is my mindset.”

McGregor also spoke about how the injury became a catalyst for personal growth and renewed determination. “An injury is a process of discovery,” he explained.

“You uncover a lot about yourself, your frame, your body, your movements, your mechanics, what you must do to maintain. Everything happens for a reason.

This allowed me to carry on with my career and it will bring longevity to my career.”

As fight night approaches, all eyes will be on McGregor to see whether he can recapture his previous form and continue his journey in the UFC.
