A 10-year-old boy from Kansas City tragically died after sleepwalking out of his home and ending up in a nearby pond, police report.
Jackson S. Georgari was discovered unresponsive in a pond near the Briarcliff Village shopping center in Kansas City, Missouri, around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday-just about a mile from his residence.
Despite immediate efforts by first responders to revive him, Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death, though there are no indications of foul play.
Jackson’s family shared with local news that he had a history of sleepwalking and did not know how to swim. His sister, Semina Richard, recounted previous incidents: once in San Diego, where he was found wandering the streets after sleepwalking, and another more recent episode after their move to Missouri, when he walked all the way to his school-one of the few familiar places to him.
Jackson was a student at Briarcliff Elementary School. In response to the heartbreaking news, the school’s Parent Teacher Organization released a statement expressing condolences and requesting privacy for the family during this difficult time. They also assured the community that information about ways to support the family would be shared when available.
“Our Briarcliff family is heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our students, Jackson Georgari,” the statement read. “We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone whose lives were touched by him.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jackson’s death, and an autopsy is planned to provide more clarity. The community mourns alongside the family as they process this devastating loss.
