Senator Mitch McConnell has finally addressed widespread speculation about his health, revealing that he suffered a fall that led to hospitalization. After a period of silence, the Kentucky Republican issued an official statement through his office, providing details about his condition.
McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14 and remains in a rehabilitation center where he is receiving physical therapy. He cited a desire for privacy as the reason for the delay in sharing this information. His wife, who recently returned from a lengthy trip to China, has been by his side during his recovery.
In his letter to constituents, McConnell explained, “I took a fall which landed me in the hospital.” He reassured the public that doctors confirmed he did not sustain any broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages. Although he was briefly unconscious, the senator emphasized that he is on the mend.
During his hospital stay, McConnell also contracted a mild case of pneumonia but has since moved to a rehabilitation facility. Despite his health challenges, he continues to work remotely with his staff.
However, he acknowledged that he is not yet ready to return to the Senate floor. “As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time.
And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet,” he wrote.
McConnell, 84, has a history of health issues stemming from a childhood bout with polio, which has affected his mobility over the years. His congressional physician’s office noted that he has experienced several falls recently due to his post-polio condition, and his current physical therapy aims to reduce future risks.
The office also confirmed that a comprehensive evaluation ruled out fractures, cardiac problems, strokes, tumors, or hemorrhages. This latest incident follows previous hospitalizations, including a concussion in March 2023 after a fall in a Washington hotel, and other episodes where he appeared disoriented during public events.
Senator McConnell is expected to retire at the end of his current term, concluding one of the longest tenures in modern American politics. Republicans have nominated U.S. Representative Andy Barr as his successor, while Democrats have put forward former state lawmaker Charles Booker.
