Ron Howard, a familiar figure in Hollywood for over five decades, hasn’t always found the spotlight easy to step into. During a recent Happy Days reunion panel at Fanboy Expo in Knoxville, Tennessee, his former co-stars Don Most and Anson Williams reminisced about the early days of filming the iconic show, revealing that Howard once battled stage fright.
Anson Williams, who played Potsie, shared with the audience that while he, Don Most, and Henry Winkler were no strangers to live audiences thanks to their theater backgrounds, Howard had never performed on stage before. “Every Friday felt like opening night-exciting and nerve-wracking-but Ron was new to that world,” Williams explained.
He recalled a particular evening in 1975 when Howard, who portrayed Richie Cunningham, went missing just before the show was set to begin. Williams found him in the wardrobe room, visibly shaking and turned away.
“I called out to him, and then he walked out and absolutely nailed it that night,” Williams said. “That’s when he discovered he was really good at performing live.”
Williams also highlighted the collaborative nature of Happy Days, noting that the cast had the chance to rehearse and improve scenes rather than just reading from a script. He believes this creative process contributed to the show’s longevity and success, eventually making it a global favorite during its 11-season run.
Henry Winkler, known for his role as Fonzie, also previously spoke about Howard’s early nerves in a June podcast with Ted Danson. “You’d never guess when you see him now,” Winkler remarked. “This man can do anything.”
These insights shed light on the humble beginnings of a Hollywood legend, reminding fans that even stars face moments of uncertainty before shining brightly.
