For my husband’s 50th birthday, we marked the occasion with an unforgettable adventure: our first African safari. What began as a global trip quickly pivoted when he revealed that an African safari had long been on his bucket list. Determined to make it happen while respecting our budget and limited time, I set out to find an option that balanced cost with an authentic experience.
After thorough research, I booked a three-day, two-night safari for two in South Africa’s Kruger National Park through SafariWithUs, costing just under $1,500. The package included air-conditioned transport, lodging, and two meals daily-a price more reasonable than I had anticipated.
Our journey started nervously in Johannesburg, waiting for our driver who would transport us to the lodge. A surprise stop at Alzu Petroport, dubbed “the world’s best gas station,” offered a chance to stretch our legs and catch glimpses of nearby rhinos, setting the tone for the wildlife encounters to come.
Settled into our air-conditioned room, we quickly headed out for the first game drive. Riding in an open safari vehicle with a guide and a tracker perched on the hood, we glimpsed giraffes, hyenas, elephants, water buffalo, and impalas-the latter humorously nicknamed “the McDonald’s of the bush” due to their abundance and distinctive markings.
A memorable moment came when a young elephant trumpeted loudly as we passed close by, reminding us of the wild power surrounding us. That evening, the guides surprised us with a gourmet dinner deep in the bush, complete with elegant table settings and open-fire cooking-while a curious hyena named “Bob” kept a watchful eye nearby.
While the full three days offered varied animal sightings-including hippos, zebras, lions, and ostriches-the initial day and evening felt the most impactful. In hindsight, a shorter safari would have sufficed and saved money without sacrificing the quality of the experience.
For those considering a safari on a budget, self-drive options and campsites can reduce costs significantly. Still, for our first safari, having armed, knowledgeable guides enhanced safety and enriched our understanding of the wildlife and terrain.
Overall, the safari was a memorable, worthwhile addition to our milestone celebration-one that exceeded my expectations both in value and adventure.
