A tragic incident unfolded in Passaic, New Jersey, where a 10-year-old boy is believed to have drowned while heroically attempting to save his 11-year-old sister after both were swept into the Passaic River.
Authorities recovered the boy’s body shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, search efforts resumed Thursday morning for the 10-year-old girl who remains missing. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora shared that the surviving child recounted how her brother pushed her toward rocks along the riverbank, enabling her to climb out of the water safely.
Rescue teams have returned to the river using boats and sonar technology, though rising water levels have complicated the search. Initial overnight efforts were unsuccessful. Officials said the children were near a riverbank ramp when they fell into the water, and bystanders across the river quickly called 911.
Mayor Lora expressed deep sympathy for the family, who are grappling not only with this loss but also with the recent passing of the children’s father. He noted the family’s gratitude for the outpouring of community support during this difficult time.
While community members have offered assistance with boats, the mayor urged everyone to keep clear of the water to allow trained divers and emergency personnel to continue their critical work safely.
