More than 150 migrants were rescued after their boat caught fire and capsized while attempting to cross the English Channel from France on Tuesday, officials reported.
French maritime authorities first encountered the vessel overnight, rescuing five individuals who were brought to Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France. However, the remaining 157 migrants on board declined assistance, expressing a strong determination to reach the United Kingdom.
Due to the boat’s overcrowded and fragile condition, officials decided against forcing the migrants onto rescue vessels, fearing it could increase the risk of a shipwreck. Unfortunately, hours later, the boat’s engine caught fire, its structure rapidly deteriorated, and it capsized.
Three rescue boats responded promptly, safely transporting all 157 migrants back to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities occurred during the incident.
This event follows statements made just a day earlier by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who vowed to be “relentless” in addressing the issue of small boats crossing the Channel. Additionally, Britain’s Reform UK party announced plans to deploy the Royal Navy to intercept and turn back small vessels if elected.
