Ugandan Soccer Captain David Owori Dies Following Assault in Kampala
KAMPALA – David Owori, the 28-year-old captain of SC Villa and a prominent figure in Ugandan soccer, has tragically died after being assaulted in Kampala, police confirmed.
Owori sustained critical injuries during an attack by unknown assailants in a suburb of the capital on Tuesday. Passers-by discovered him unconscious and rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was later transferred to another medical facility where he was pronounced dead, according to police spokesperson Racheal Kawala.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to Owori, describing him as more than just an athlete. “David was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation.
As captain of SC Villa, he led with courage, humility, and passion. Wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation,” the federation said in a statement.
The incident has sparked outrage among Ugandans, many of whom criticized the authorities on social media for failing to effectively address the country’s ongoing security issues. Crime rates have been a growing concern in Kampala, intensifying public frustration.
Owori’s death follows a similar tragedy earlier this year when rugby player Sydney Gongodyo was fatally attacked by a mob in Kampala after being mistakenly accused of theft.
“Sadly, Ugandan sport has been hit with many such tragedies lately, and we hope for justice and a lasting solution,” said the National Council of Sports Uganda.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has urged government officials to take urgent action to improve the nation’s security situation, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive response to the challenges facing the country.
