Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy Returns to Practice Following Family Tragedy
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy made his first appearance at team practice on Monday since the tragic shooting incident involving his wife at their Virginia home. The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Bieniemy, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Bieniemy arrived at Missouri Western State University, where the Chiefs conduct their training camp, and was welcomed by a small group of supportive fans. Without missing a beat, he quickly dove back into coaching duties during practice.
Elijah Bieniemy faces serious charges, including malicious wounding, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Court proceedings have been postponed pending a mental health evaluation.
Since returning to the Chiefs earlier this year, Bieniemy maintained close contact with head coach Andy Reid and the coaching staff. He stayed involved by watching practice streams and even offered in-the-moment guidance to the team, notably calling Chiefs manager Brett Veach to relay a coaching point to Reid.
Bieniemy has been an integral part of Kansas City’s coaching success, contributing to three Super Bowl appearances and two victories. His initial departure came as he sought offensive coordinator duties with the Washington Commanders to gain play-calling experience and enhance his prospects for an NFL head coaching position.
Following a challenging season with Washington that ended with a staff overhaul, Bieniemy spent time coaching at UCLA and with the Chicago Bears before returning to Kansas City. He stepped into the offensive coordinator role previously held by Matt Nagy, who moved on to the New York Giants.
As Bieniemy resumes his coaching responsibilities, the Chiefs and their fans rally behind him during this difficult personal chapter.
