Former Boxing Champion Zolani Tete Shot and Killed at 38 in South Africa

Additional Coverage:

Zolani Tete, the celebrated former two-division world boxing champion, has tragically passed away at the age of 38. He was fatally shot outside his home in Mdantsane, South Africa, a fact confirmed by the South African Department of Sport on Friday evening.

Tete’s professional boxing journey began impressively, with a 13-0 record that earned him a shot at world championship gold. However, his first title opportunity ended in defeat when he was stopped by fellow South African Moruti Mthalane during their IBF flyweight title bout.

Following that setback, Tete’s record was mixed, going 3-2 before embarking on a remarkable 12-fight winning streak that established him as one of the sport’s most dynamic fighters. During this period, he claimed the IBF junior bantamweight title with a decision victory over Teiru Kinoshita. He successfully defended this title once, knocking out Paul Butler, before vacating it instead of facing a mandatory challenger.

Moving up to bantamweight, Tete captured the interim WBO title by defeating Arthur Villanueva and was soon promoted to full champion status. In his first title defense, he delivered a stunning knockout against Siboniso Gonya with the very first punch of the fight, setting a record for the fastest knockout in boxing title fight history.

Tete defended his bantamweight title twice more before suffering an unexpected third-round knockout loss to John Riel Casimero. He returned to the ring with two subsequent wins, but his career faced a major blow when he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in the second of those fights. This resulted in a four-year suspension, which only concluded just weeks before his untimely death.

Zolani Tete’s passing marks a somber moment for the boxing community, who remember him for his resilience, explosive power, and significant contributions to the sport.
