Country music icon Barbara Mandrell has joined the outpouring of tributes following the passing of Dolly Parton, who died at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25.
Mandrell, 77, took to Instagram to honor her longtime friend and fellow star, sharing a poignant black-and-white photo from the 14th Annual CMA Awards held at the Grand Ole Opry House on October 13, 1980. The image captures the moment they announced George Jones as Male Vocalist of the Year, highlighting a cherished memory from decades past.
In her heartfelt caption, Mandrell reflected, “Dolly was truly one of a kind. God blessed her with an extraordinary gift, but as remarkable as her talent was, her heart was even greater. I will always treasure her friendship, her laughter and the wonderful memories we shared through the years.”
The friendship between Parton and Mandrell dates back to their early careers. They were seen together at the Country Music Hall of Fame Walkway of Stars ceremony in April 1972, and Dolly made several appearances on Mandrell’s variety show, Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters, which aired in the early 1980s.
Mandrell continued, “She brought so much joy to this world, and I know her music, her kindness and her faith will continue to touch lives for generations.” She closed her tribute with a message of sympathy and love: “My prayers are with her family and all who loved her. I will always love you, @dollyparton.”
