Princess Diana’s legacy continues to resonate worldwide, but for her brother, Charles Spencer, the anniversary of her passing remains a profoundly personal day of reflection.
As the 9th Earl Spencer, Charles has been a steadfast guardian of his sister’s memory for nearly 30 years. Since delivering his poignant eulogy at Westminster Abbey in 1997-where he vowed that Diana’s family would protect her legacy-he has consistently invited the public to remember the woman beyond the global icon.
Each year, through heartfelt glimpses of family moments and quiet scenes from Althorp Estate-the Spencer family home where Diana was raised and ultimately laid to rest-Charles offers a rare and intimate perspective on the enduring sibling bond that defined her remarkable life.
On August 31, Spencer shared three photos on Instagram showing Althorp Estate with its flag flying at half-mast. The grand estate was where he, Diana, and their sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes grew up.
Accompanying the images, he wrote a simple but poignant message: “31 August. My least favorite day.”

This date marks the tragic day in 1997 when Diana died from injuries sustained in a car crash in Paris. She was accompanied by her companion Dodi al Fayed and their driver Henri Paul, who also perished, while bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived.
Beyond his social media tributes, Spencer frequently honors Diana’s memory by sharing rare photographs and personal reflections on their childhood. He is now preparing to share her story in his upcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, scheduled for release on September 22.
“The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral,” Spencer said in a recent statement. “As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”
Princess Diana’s final resting place is a peaceful island in the Round Oval lake at Althorp Park’s Pleasure Garden. Charles has often spoken about the comfort he finds knowing that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have a private and tranquil sanctuary where they can honor their mother in their own time.
In 2017, Spencer shared with People magazine, “I never go to Diana with them. It’s very much their time there.
But I think it’s very important for them to be there with her. It is, luckily, very tranquil here, and they can come and go as they wish whenever they want.
And that’s very lovely for me to know that.”
