Barry Williams, best known for his role as Greg Brady on the classic 1970s ABC sitcom The Brady Bunch, recently opened up about his on-screen romances-and one particular co-star he still wonders about.
At RetroCon, held September 13 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, the 71-year-old actor was asked during a fan Q&A if he ever felt real-life attraction to any of Greg Brady’s girlfriends on the show. His immediate response?
“All of them!” However, Williams clarified that since their interactions were always professional, nothing ever went beyond friendship.
Still, one actress left a lasting impression. Williams fondly recalled Marge, a character from the 1973 episode “The Cincinnati Kids,” set at the Kings Island amusement park in Cincinnati.
Marge was played by Hilary Thompson, who worked at a football-throwing stand in the episode. Greg’s character flirted with her as he tried to impress her with his football skills, even joking that he might have thrown more balls than famed quarterback Joe Namath in a season.
Williams admitted to the audience that he’s often thought about what became of Thompson. “I’d love to look her up and see where she ended up,” he said with a smile. He also joked that his on-screen sister Marcia Brady, played by Maureen McCormick, was never a fan of Marge.
Hilary Thompson, now 77, enjoyed a solid acting career through the ’70s and ’80s, with roles on shows like Starsky & Hutch, Barnaby Jones, and Charlie’s Angels. Her last credited TV role was in the 1988 sitcom ALF, the same year she married.
Williams’ connection to Kings Island runs deep. In 2013, he returned to the amusement park with fellow Brady cast members Christopher Knight and Susan Olsen for a fan event.
When asked if Marge was still manning the football throw, Williams joked, “I hope so. I’m looking for her!”
He added that the hole had been made 33 percent smaller, making the challenge tougher-but he was up for it.
During the five-season run of The Brady Bunch, Greg Brady had his share of memorable crushes and girlfriends, including Jennifer Nichols (played by Tannis Montgomery), Linda, Kathy Lawrence (Sheri Cowart), and Rachel, portrayed by showrunner Sherwood Schwartz’s daughter, Hope Juber.
As fans continue to cherish the nostalgic charm of The Brady Bunch, Williams’ lighthearted reflections remind us of the enduring bonds formed both on and off-screen.
