Two giant pandas have made their grand debut in Atlanta, arriving at Zoo Atlanta to much excitement.
Ping Ping, a 6-year-old male, and Fu Shuang, a 5-year-old female, touched down at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Sunday, September 27, after an 8,000-mile journey from Chengdu, China. Their trip was aboard a specially designated FedEx Boeing 777, affectionately named the “FedEx Panda Express.” From the airport, the pair were escorted by police to their new home at Zoo Atlanta.
This arrival ushers in a new era for the zoo, which returned its previous pandas to China earlier this year. Raymond B.
King, President and CEO of Zoo Atlanta, described the moment as historic for the city. “We are thrilled to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and look forward to sharing this joy with our members, guests, and the community,” King stated.
He emphasized the importance of the partnership with the China Wildlife Conservation Association, highlighting the ongoing conservation efforts to protect this vulnerable species.
Before making their public debut, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will spend about a month in quarantine within a secure area of the zoo’s new giant panda complex. Their presence supports a renewed conservation and breeding program under the new agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Ping Ping’s name means “peace,” a nod to the first panda gifted to the Soviet Union back in 1957. Born on March 17, 2020, the male panda is noted for his dark eye circles, strong build, and impressive climbing skills.
Fu Shuang, whose name means “double blessings,” arrived seven months later. She is recognized for a distinctive tuft of fur on her head and a keen ability to forage.
Together, their names symbolize a message of peace and good fortune, a fitting welcome for these beloved ambassadors of wildlife conservation.
