At least three people were killed and 298 others were injured in a gas explosion that caused a fire in Nairobi, Kenya. The explosion occurred in the Mradi area of Nairobi’s Embakasi neighborhood late Thursday night. The injured individuals were taken to various hospitals, while others received medical treatment at the scene. The fire, which destroyed homes and warehouses, has been contained and secured by the police.
Kenya Police Service Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja visited the site and a multi-agency team is currently present. The Kenya Red Cross is providing aid and support services to those affected, including reuniting separated children with their parents. Nairobi City County has waived hospital bills for the victims and is distributing essential food and non-food items to affected families.
The incident is under investigation, and the government is urging people to donate blood and items to help the victims. The explosion took place at an illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant. Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) previously rejected applications for construction permits at the site due to safety concerns and the high population density in the area.
EPRA emphasized that it takes actions to revoke licenses for plants that do not meet safety standards and demolish illegal plants across the country.
