A tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers on Wednesday morning, as reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Additionally, nine other individuals suffered injuries and were hospitalized.
The alleged shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, was swiftly apprehended by police shortly after the incident began. Gray surrendered without incident and is currently in custody.
He faces murder charges and will be tried as an adult, according to the GBI. It remains unclear whether the victims were specifically targeted.
During the chaos, senior Sergio Caldera described hearing gunshots while in his chemistry class. His teacher initially opened the door to investigate the noise before another teacher urged them to secure the room.
Caldera recounted the terrifying moments of hearing more gunfire and screams while they took cover. Eventually, his class was evacuated to the football field.
Another student, Kyson Stancion, expressed his fear as he also heard gunshots and police commands during the ordeal. His teacher worked to ensure the safety of all students in the distressing situation.
Jonathan Mills, a local police officer and father of a junior at the school, described his anxiety and relief upon reuniting with his son, emphasizing that such violent events are unexpected in their community.
The aftermath of the shooting has deeply affected the town approximately 45 miles outside of Atlanta, leading to the closure of Barrow County Schools for the remainder of the week. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith labeled the shooting as “pure evil.”
The incident drew comments from national leaders, with President Joe Biden expressing sorrow and a commitment to addressing gun violence, advocating for legislative changes. Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke on the need for enhanced gun safety laws while campaigning, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his heartbreak and reassured that resources would be provided to assist the community during this difficult time.
In response to the tragedy, Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens announced increased patrols around schools, reflecting widespread concern and solidarity with the affected families.
