Georgia High School Shooter’s Father Taken into Custody

Additional Coverage:

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation recently reported the arrest of Colin Gray, 54, the father of Colt Gray, a teenager implicated in the Apalachee High School shooting. Colin faces multiple charges, including four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. His son, Colt, has been charged with four counts of felony murder following the tragic event that resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers at the school in Winder, Georgia.

Authorities held a press briefing where GBI Director Chris Hosey revealed that the charges against Colin Gray arose from his failure to prevent his son from accessing a firearm, despite laws against minor’s owning guns. Currently, Colin Gray is detained at the Barrow County Detention Center.

The shooting, which took place on a Wednesday morning, also left nine other people wounded. They are all expected to recover fully, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, with several already discharged from the hospital.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if the weapon, an AR-style gun, was bought by the teen’s father and given to him last December. Additional scrutiny has resurfaced regarding both Colt and his father from a previous FBI tip-off about potential threat posts online, leading to interviews by the Jackson County Sheriff’s office last year. However, no sufficient evidence was found then to take further action.

Divorce proceedings involving the parents of the alleged shooter have uncovered that while other siblings went with the mother, the teenage suspect stayed with his father. Colt Gray is now being tried as an adult, with his initial court appearance scheduled shortly after the incident.
