Witnesses Describe Horrific Scene

Volunteer firefighter John Payne witnessed the catastrophe firsthand. He recalled seeing a 30-foot wall of water carrying boulders and decimating everything in its path. The impact was so powerful that it collapsed a bridge, hurling its steel beams into the air like horseshoes.

Lake Lure Becomes a Whirlpool of Debris

The remnants of Chimney Rock Village surged into the neighboring town of Lake Lure, transforming its marina into a swirling vortex of debris. Boats and structures were tossed about like toys, as the town’s once-pristine shores became a scene of devastation.

Hope Amidst the Destruction

Despite the overwhelming destruction, residents are determined to rebuild. Iraq War veteran Chris Canada, who moved to the town to escape hurricanes, witnessed the aftermath with horror but refused to be defeated.

Volunteer firefighter Payne expressed his pride in the community’s resilience, noting that they would not be driven away by the disaster.

Mayor’s Optimism for the Future

Mayor Peter O’Leary believes that Chimney Rock Village’s spirit of hospitality and entrepreneurship will guide its recovery. He envisions a brighter future, built on the resilience and determination of its residents.

Uncertainty for Businesses

Some business owners, like Nick Sottile of the Broad River Inn and Stagecoach Pizza Kitchen, face an uncertain future. The destruction has left their livelihoods in ruins, and insurance claims have been denied.

Despite the challenges, Sottile remains optimistic, knowing that the community will band together to rebuild. He expressed his gratitude for the support and prayers he has received.
