Ford Recalls 1.4 Million F-150 Trucks Over Dangerous Gearshift Problem

Additional Coverage:

Ford Motor Company is initiating a recall of nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a gearshift defect that poses a heightened risk of crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Federal regulators have identified that a disrupted signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause certain F-150 models to unexpectedly downshift into second gear. This sudden downshift may lead to a loss of vehicle control.

The recall specifically impacts F-150 trucks equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017.

NHTSA’s recall notice also highlights that some owners might observe an illuminated malfunction indicator or wrench light on their dashboard if there is a problem with the transmission range sensor.

Ford has acknowledged two injuries and one accident potentially linked to this gearshift issue. The company will begin notifying affected vehicle owners by mail starting April 27. Owners are advised to visit their local Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the necessary components inspected and repaired free of charge.
