Additional Coverage:

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron recently opened up about a traumatic event from her youth-the fatal shooting of her father by her mother. The 50-year-old star, known for her role as Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film Monster, shared the harrowing family history during a filmed podcast with The New York Times, released on April 18.

Theron recounted that on June 21, 1991, when she was just 15, her father, intoxicated and angry, lashed out violently after a minor mistake. “I just knew… that was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back for him. I felt it, I felt something was different,” she said, reflecting on the tense atmosphere that preceded the tragedy.

In the interview, Charlize described urging her mother to separate from her father, a moment she never imagined would come. When her father returned home that night, she tried to avoid confrontation by pretending to be asleep. However, he forcefully broke into their house, firing shots through steel doors in an apparent attempt to harm them.

Charlize vividly recalled the terrifying moments when she and her mother held the door with their bodies, as there was no lock, while her father fired through it. Her mother, having retrieved a gun from a safe, ultimately shot him as he tried to access more weapons. Thankfully, neither Charlize nor her mother was injured.

The actress noted that no charges were filed against her mother, as the shooting was ruled self-defense. She also acknowledged the painful reality that such violence is sadly common in many households.

The candid discussion resonated deeply with viewers on social media platforms like Reddit, where many praised Charlize’s strength in sharing her story and expressed solidarity with those affected by domestic abuse.

Theron’s revelation not only sheds light on her personal history but also underscores the widespread issue of family violence and the difficult choices faced by those trapped in such circumstances.
