Deadly Firecracker Factory Blast in India Traps Workers Under Rubble

Additional Coverage:

At least 20 people have died following a massive explosion at a firecracker factory in Tamil Nadu, India. The incident occurred on Sunday in the Virudhunagar district, where around 100 employees were working inside the factory at the time.

The blast caused severe injuries to dozens, many suffering from serious burns. Among the six workers initially hospitalized, four remain in critical condition, including three women. A second explosion later in the day injured an additional 17 people, including police officers and firefighters who were on site clearing debris.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion, but preliminary investigations suggest it may have been triggered by friction during the chemical mixing or manufacturing process. Reports indicate the factory was operating on a Sunday without the proper permissions, despite industry norms that typically keep such units closed on that day.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has deployed senior ministers to oversee rescue efforts at the site. In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and assured that officials are working to support affected families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences, describing the event as “deeply distressing” and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.

The Virudhunagar region is a major hub for India’s fireworks industry, responsible for about 90% of the country’s production. However, it has a troubling history of accidents linked to inadequate safety measures and illegal operations.

Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the gravity of the tragedy and called for swift action to manage the rescue operations and provide relief to the victims’ families.
