Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler to Star in New Miami Vice Movie

Additional Coverage:

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have been cast to bring new life to the iconic 1980s characters Sonny and Rico in the upcoming Miami Vice reboot.

Fresh off his recent Academy Award win for Best Actor for his role in the horror film Sinners, Michael B. Jordan, 39, is set to portray Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Miami Vice ’85.

His co-star, Austin Butler, 34, known for his performance in Elvis, will take on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, originally portrayed by Don Johnson in the 1984 television series. The show followed these undercover detectives as they navigated the dangerous world of drug trafficking and crime in Miami.

This new film draws inspiration from the pilot and first season of the original series, situating the story firmly in the 1980s, often dubbed the “decade of greed.” This setting distinguishes it from the 2006 Miami Vice film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. Renowned director Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, will direct the movie, which will be shot for IMAX.

Originally scheduled for an earlier release, Miami Vice ’85 is now set to hit theaters in spring 2028. The delay was announced alongside schedule changes for other Universal Studios projects, including moving The Mummy 4 to October 2027. Although fans may be disappointed by the wait, there are other exciting projects to anticipate from the stars.

Michael B. Jordan is also set to direct, produce, and star in a fresh take on The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon Studios and MGM.

He will play the titular art thief, a role previously brought to life by Pierce Brosnan in 1999 and originally by Steve McQueen in 1968. The cast includes Adria Arjona as the lead love interest, with Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, and Aubrey Plaza rounding out the ensemble.

Meanwhile, Austin Butler is busy with a new project alongside Tom Holland, portraying the Whittington brothers-famous race car drivers involved in a notorious 1980s scandal-in another Amazon Studios and MGM production. He’s also set to star in Enemies with Jeremy Allen White.

Known for his standout roles in Elvis and Dune: Part Two, Austin continues to build an impressive filmography alongside Michael’s expanding career.

Miami Vice ’85 is slated for theatrical release on Friday, May 19, 2028. Fans of the classic series and new audiences alike can look forward to this stylish return to Miami’s sun-soaked streets and high-stakes undercover drama.
