At the 20th annual Time100 Gala held on Thursday, April 23, comedian Nikki Glaser playfully teased Victoria Beckham about her famously reserved public demeanor. In her opening monologue, Glaser highlighted Beckham’s impressive career and personal life before zeroing in on the designer’s reluctance to smile.
“One of the most impressive people on the list is Victoria Beckham, of course,” Glaser remarked. “She was a global pop star, now a serious fashion designer.
Married to David Beckham, rich, successful, stunning. What’s it going to take to get you to smile?
I mean, really, please smile. You’re one of the only British people who should.”
The camera cut to Victoria Beckham, who responded with a subtle, tight-lipped smile while resting her elbow on the table, appearing to suppress a laugh. Beside her, David Beckham smiled and chuckled at the joke, despite ongoing family tensions involving their eldest son Brooklyn.
Professionally, Victoria Beckham continues to thrive. She recently launched a new collection with GAP and showcased her Victoria Beckham brand at the TIME100 Summit, achievements that Glaser alluded to during her monologue.
However, the public humor contrasted with a more serious family situation. Victoria and David Beckham have been estranged from Brooklyn Beckham, 27. Reports earlier this month indicated that the couple has made multiple efforts to mend their relationship, offering to meet Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz under various conditions, including with legal or therapeutic support.
Brooklyn, however, has expressed a firm stance against reconciliation. In January, he posted on Instagram that he did not wish to reconcile with his family, citing long-standing tensions that predated his 2022 marriage to Peltz. He also criticized his parents for what he described as “performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships.”
Victoria and David Beckham have not publicly addressed these specific allegations. Nonetheless, Victoria spoke more generally about family during a recent Today show interview, emphasizing their commitment to their children’s well-being.
“We always put our children first,” she said. “We love our children so much and we’ve always really focused on protecting our children.”
She also highlighted the close support network she shares with David and their parents.
Married since 1999, Victoria and David Beckham are also parents to sons Cruz, 21, Romeo, 23, and daughter Harper, 14.
