$1 Bills with These 8 Numbers Could Be Worth Thousands

Additional Coverage:

Most people are familiar with rare collectibles like state quarters or star banknotes, but there’s another gem you might have tucked away in your wallet-“radar” bills. These uncommon banknotes derive their name from their palindromic serial numbers, which read the same forwards and backwards (think 12344321 or 66688666).

Because these bills are so rare, they’ve caught the attention of both collectors and numerology fans, who are often willing to pay a premium to add one to their collections. Doug Mudd, curator and director of the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum at the American Numismatics Association, explains that while radar notes are popular and can command higher prices, many people simply overlook them.

Among radar bills, some versions stand out as particularly valuable. Higher denomination notes tend to be more sought-after since they are printed in smaller quantities, making unique serial numbers even less common. Collectors often prize bills with repeating palindromic sequences-such as those containing two four-digit palindrome segments like 12211221 or “super radar” numbers with repetitive digits in the center, like 01111110 or 12222221.

As for value, radar $1 bills have fetched impressive sums at auction. Heritage Auctions reports that such notes have sold for well over $1,000, sometimes more.

Even standard radar bills, without the elaborate repeating sequences, sell for significantly above their face value. For example, a $1 bill with the serial number 63122136 recently sold on eBay for around $70.

However, Mudd points out that from a purely mathematical standpoint, radar serial numbers aren’t inherently rarer than any other serial number. The premium comes from collectors’ fascination with unique number patterns, making radar bills a niche but rewarding area for enthusiasts.

In summary, if you happen to spot a radar bill while digging through your wallet, it might be worth holding onto-it could be more valuable than you think to the right collector.
