A Tremonton, Utah couple has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of their 11-year-old son, following an investigation that uncovered evidence of prolonged child abuse and torture.
On May 6, authorities took Brigham Young Merrell, 35, and his wife Melinda Marie Merrell, 36, into custody. Brigham Merrell faces charges of child abuse homicide and child torture, while Melinda Merrell is charged with child torture in the death of their son, Moroni Merrell.
The investigation began on September 21, 2025, after police responded to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child. According to police reports, Brigham Merrell called emergency services claiming he had found his son hanging and was performing CPR.
However, officers arriving at the scene observed that Merrell was not actively administering CPR. Despite emergency responders’ efforts at the scene and subsequent medical treatment, Moroni was pronounced dead.
Police allege that Brigham Merrell carried Moroni’s body upstairs and attempted to stage the scene to look like a hanging. Surveillance footage from inside the home showed Merrell moving the child past emergency responders and into an upstairs bedroom. Investigators noted inconsistencies in the father’s accounts of the incident and discovered evidence suggesting attempts to conceal physical evidence, including discarded items, painted-over surfaces, and altered rooms.
A forensic examination revealed injuries on the child inconsistent with Merrell’s statements, including unexplained bruising on Moroni’s back. Interviews with other children in the home and their acquaintances revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning years. Allegations included food restriction, corporal punishment causing bruises from belts and pans, and punitive confinement in an outdoor dog run.
Both parents reportedly admitted to the abuse, with Melinda Merrell stating she was unaware that leaving marks on children was unacceptable under Utah law. Authorities emphasized that the arrests followed an extensive multi-agency investigation.
The Tremonton-Garland Police Department affirmed their commitment to pursuing justice for Moroni and protecting the surviving children, stating the case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
