- Hantavirus bombshell as 2 vials of deadly rat virus vanished from Australian lab in 2021 (themirror.com)
In 2021, more than 300 vials containing various viruses went missing from an Australian laboratory, including two vials of hantavirus. Among the lost samples were nearly 100 vials of Hendra virus and 223 vials of lyssavirus. At the time, officials suggested that the disappearance was likely due to the vials being misplaced during a transfer to a new freezer.
The Ministry of Health launched an investigation and ultimately concluded that the missing vials were probably destroyed, rather than stolen or simply lost. However, the matter has gained renewed attention following a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, sparking fresh questions about the fate of those missing samples.
So far, the outbreak has claimed the lives of three individuals: a 70-year-old Dutch man, his 69-year-old wife, and a German woman. Several other passengers, including a former British police officer, have been evacuated to specialized medical facilities in the Netherlands and Switzerland for treatment. Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of the Andes strain of hantavirus in samples from the ship-this is the only known hantavirus variant capable of human-to-human transmission.
In response to public concern, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement clarifying that this outbreak is not related to COVID-19. A WHO spokesperson emphasized that hantavirus spreads differently and that the current situation is contained within the cruise ship environment. The organization is actively implementing preventive measures to prevent further transmission and manage the outbreak.
Most hantavirus strains do not transmit between humans, and the WHO continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent any escalation.
