Gunman with Long Criminal Record Opens Fire on Busy Massachusetts Roadway

A police-involved shooting in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Monday sparked widespread outrage online, particularly after revelations about the suspected gunman’s extensive criminal past. Authorities say the suspect, identified as Tyler Brown, opened fire along a busy roadway, prompting a swift and forceful law enforcement response.

Video footage shared by FOX 25 Boston shows Brown walking down Memorial Drive while firing a rifle as cars pass nearby. Although the clip ends before the suspect is shot, officials confirmed that Brown was struck by gunfire during the incident.

Massachusetts State Police reported that troopers responded shortly after 1:20 p.m. to reports of a shooting near Memorial Drive and River Street. Emergency medical services treated at least one individual for gunshot wounds on the scene.

Cambridge Police Department officials confirmed their involvement, stating there was no ongoing threat to public safety and urging residents to avoid the area. The incident reportedly began after Boston police alerted authorities to a man behaving erratically and believed to be armed with a rifle.

By the time officers arrived, the situation escalated into what was described as an active shooter incident, with Brown firing erratically from the middle of a busy roadway, striking two men in separate vehicles. Both victims were rushed to Boston hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

A Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian, described as a licensed former Marine, confronted Brown as people sought cover. Both fired their weapons, hitting the suspect multiple times. Brown was treated at the scene and transported to a Boston hospital, where he remains in custody.

Officials reported that approximately 50 to 60 rounds were fired in a very short span during the chaotic episode. Brown faces multiple charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and various weapons offenses.

Boston 25 News highlighted Brown’s lengthy criminal history, dating back nearly two decades, with prior convictions involving firearms and drugs. Notably, in 2020, Brown fired at Boston police officers while on probation, a case that sparked controversy when a judge imposed a lighter sentence than prosecutors had sought.

The suspect’s criminal record and the perceived leniency of previous sentences ignited online criticism. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy condemned the judge’s decision on social media, while Massachusetts Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue pledged to advocate for tougher penalties for repeat offenders.

Minogue emphasized the importance of public safety, stating, “When our criminal justice system throws common sense out the window and allows dangerous, violent people to get out of prison quickly or early, it means innocent moms, dads, and kids may be killed. I am grateful to the officers who stopped today’s attack and saved lives.”

Governor Maura Healey assured the public there is no ongoing threat following the shooting. In a statement posted on social media, she said, “I’m closely monitoring the situation.

State Police and local law enforcement are working together to investigate. Residents and commuters are encouraged to avoid the area to allow public safety personnel to do their work.

I am grateful to first responders who acted swiftly to keep people safe and secure the scene.”
