Pete Hegseth Sparks Outrage with Sharp Words at West Point Graduation

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth sparked controversy among conservatives following a fiery commencement address at the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 23.

During the ceremony, which Fox News broadcast live, Hegseth, 45, spoke candidly to the graduating cadets about faith, combat, and leadership. However, his remarks took a sharp turn when he addressed the topic of identity months-such as Black History Month and Women’s History Month-that recognize various cultural and social awareness efforts throughout the year.

Hegseth delivered a blunt message, declaring, “You do not have time to celebrate identity months.” He emphasized that cadets should not compromise or focus on “arbitrary quotas based on immutable characteristics,” urging them instead to lead without excuses.

The comments quickly drew criticism on social media, with many accusing Hegseth of politicizing what should have been an inspirational speech. One user called him “incompetent” and accused him of playing political games, while another labeled his remarks an embarrassment. A third commenter expressed disappointment that the event, meant to focus on leadership, had devolved into a “culture-war audition.”

Not all reactions were negative, however. Some supporters praised Hegseth’s stance, arguing that the military’s primary mission is to win wars and that merit should take precedence over equity initiatives. One supporter remarked, “Hegseth is giving West Point exactly what it needs.”

Throughout his address, Hegseth also criticized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, invoking the late Charlie Kirk, former cofounder of Turning Point USA, who was tragically killed in September 2025. He encouraged cadets to “seek God” and reminded them, quoting Kirk, “this too shall pass,” emphasizing resilience amid challenges.

“Combat is the ultimate test, and our best Americans must ace it,” Hegseth said, underscoring his belief that West Point’s success is grounded in merit rather than politics. He concluded with a call to unity over diversity, stating, “Diversity is not our strength. Unity is our strength.”

The speech has ignited a broader conversation about the role of identity and politics within the military and leadership training at one of the nation’s premier military academies.
