Kyle Busch’s family has confirmed that the NASCAR star passed away due to pneumonia that developed into sepsis, leading to his untimely death at age 41. The news has sent shockwaves through the racing community.

Busch, a driver for Richard Childress Racing, had been hospitalized after falling seriously ill. He is survived by his wife, Samantha, and their two children, Brexton and Lennix.

In a statement released Saturday, his family explained, “The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications.” They also requested privacy and understanding during this difficult time.

Earlier reports indicated that Busch became unresponsive on Wednesday while participating in a test session inside a Chevrolet racing simulator at the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina. Emergency responders were called around 5:30 p.m. after Busch was found coughing up blood and lying on a bathroom floor, according to a 911 call.

Just days before his hospitalization, Busch had expressed ongoing health struggles. During the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen, he asked his crew to locate a physician assistant for a shot, revealing he had been battling a significant cough and sinus cold.

NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing, and the Busch family issued a joint statement honoring Kyle’s remarkable career and impact on the sport: “Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, passionate, immensely skilled, and cared deeply about the sport and fans.

“Over more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level, and helped develop the next generation of drivers as a team owner. His sharp wit and competitive spirit endeared him to fans of all ages, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’

“Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt, all of Kyle’s family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends, and fans. NASCAR has lost a giant of the sport far too soon.”
