Southern Nevada Health District says no local cases of diarrhea-causing parasite

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Southern Nevada Health District said there have not been any local cases of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by a microscopic parasite.

The Cyclospora cayetanensis-caused illness infects people when they consume contaminated food or water, most commonly fresh produce.

As of Monday, 1,645 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across 34 states have been reported to the CDC since May 1. Nevada is one of the states that has not seen any cases as of Tuesday.

“Although sporadic local cases of cyclosporiasis are reported each year, no cases in Clark County have been linked to the multistate outbreak currently under investigation,” a release from the health district said…
