A 31-year-old man is fighting for his life after police say he lost control of his Jeep Compass early Sunday, smashing through a median, a curb, several Vegas Valley Water District boxes and a wooden power pole along South Eastern Avenue. The crash happened around 3:40 a.m. just north of East Eldorado Lane, and investigators say impairment is suspected.
According to KLAS 8 News Now, the driver was headed northbound on Eastern Avenue when he failed to maintain his travel lane, crossed into the southbound lanes and struck several water district boxes. Evidence at the scene and witness statements helped investigators piece together the crash sequence, which shows the Jeep continuing northbound along the sidewalk before hitting a curb, the raised center median and finally a large NV Energy wooden power pole. The driver was taken to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Police have not detailed what specifically led them to suspect impairment, but the station’s report notes that determination came directly from officers at the scene. Under Nevada law, driving under the influence causing substantial bodily harm is a Category B felony, according to Gallo Criminal Defense Las Vegas, carrying a mandatory two to 20 years in state prison with no eligibility for probation or a suspended sentence if charges are filed. Nevada Revised Statute 0.060 defines substantial bodily harm as any injury creating a substantial risk of death, permanent disfigurement, or prolonged loss of a bodily function — a threshold that aligns with the life-threatening injuries police reported in this case.
A Corridor Already Flagged for Danger
The stretch of South Eastern Avenue where the crash occurred sits on a corridor the City of Las Vegas has already singled out as a hot spot. Vision Zero planning documents released this year identified segments of Eastern Avenue among the valley’s highest-risk corridors for total collisions and severe injury crashes, based on multi-year state crash data — a concern Hoodline previously reported after a bicyclist was critically hurt near the Sahara and Eastern intersection earlier this month…
