LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — In the wake of another multimillion-dollar purchase of undeveloped federal land, it’s become common to expect concerns from Las Vegas neighbors. However, conservation advocates are expressing cautious optimism as construction trucks circle the desert.
The Bureau of Land Management announced a 940-acre public land sale Thursday set for a master-planned community within the jurisdiction of the City of Las Vegas. The future neighborhood, Monument Hills, is set to be built between two protected sites: Paiute land and a fossil bed.

The Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, which was recognized in Dec. 2014, is home to thousands of acres of protected Ice Age fossils. The Protectors of Tule Springs, the site’s official “friends group,” has been a consistent advocate for the site.
