MAKIKI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Funds have been approved to help control the population of rose ringed parakeets on Oahu, but officials said they have their work cut out for them.
The Hawaii Farm Bureau said populations of rose ringed parakeets continue to grow on Oahu and Kauai. Impacts of this invasive species go beyond noise complaints.
“Farming is tough. And when you have an invasive species like this that goes after your lychee or mango, rambutan, banana, papaya, longan, you know, even citrus that we’re trying to grow in a larger scale here,” Brian Miyamoto said, “they can just devastate a farmer’s crops.”…
