HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – More than 100 displaced and stray pets have been taken into the Hawaiian Humane Society since Saturday as Lala battered the state with heavy rain, flooding and wind.
The society said it is asking for the community’s help in managing the influx of displaced and stray pets.
It’s a number that continues to climb as Oahu families continue to recover and reunite with separated animals, Hawaiian Humane said.
If you’ve lost a pet
- Submit a report online at HawaiianHumane.org or by calling the Humane’s dispatch line at (808) 356-2250.
- Check the found pet listings on their website under the lost and found tab.
- If a pet’s listing is shown on Hawaii Humane’s campuses, visit in person or bring any proof of ownership. If the owner is away and a pet sitter is claiming the pet, complete the Consent for Care form.
- Share on the Paw Posse ʻOhana group on Facebook, the largest community group on Oʻahu dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their families, and search the national facial-recognition database at Lost.PetcoLove.org.
- Place flyers in the neighborhood and at nearby veterinary clinics with a clear, current photo, a detailed description, the pet’s name, and contact information. Humane Society has a lost pet poster template available to customize on Canva.
- If a pet is microchipped but the owner’s contact information has changed, contact the Hawaiian Humane Lost and Found team at (808) 356-2228 and update details with the microchip manufacturer right away. This can also be done for free at 24PetWatch.com.
- Hawaiian Humane partners with DocuPet to provide free pet registration and ID tags. If your pet already has a DocuPet tag, anyone who finds them can enter the tag ID at DocuPet.com or call the HomeSafe team at 1-877-239-6072 for 24/7 reunification support.
“Microchipping is the number one way your pet will get back to you if [a pet is] lost,” said Brandy Shimabukuro with Hawaiian Humane Society. “I don’t think one in three people realize one in three pets will get lost in their lifetime because of circumstances or things outside of your control.”…
