‘If you’ve got a brain, you should wear a helmet’: Half of Oʻahu’s bike crashes involve unhelmeted riders

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Across Oʻahu’s 36 accidents in 2026 involving e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds, motorcycles and other similar modes of transportation, approximately half of them involved unhelmeted riders — a chilling road safety statistic.

The numbers come from Honolulu Emergency Medical Services reports, which go into brief detail regarding cases that the team responds to.

Of the 36 reported incidents involving various types of bikes and scooters, 20 individuals were hospitalized as a result of their injuries. While incidents varied from bike-versus-vehicle crashes to a bike hitting a tree, EMS did not report any case involving an unhelmeted rider that resulted in anything less than serious hospitalization…
