Lane closure on Kamehameha Hwy near Waimea Bay from fallen boulders continues through late summer

HALEIWA, Hawaii (Island News) — After large boulders fell onto Kamehameha Highway near Waimea Bay earlier this month from severe weather, a lane closure for a rockfall protection project will last throughout the summer, the Honolulu Department of Transportation (HDOT) said in an update.

Kamehameha Highway north of Waimea Bay shut down on Friday afternoon, April 10, 2026, after severe weather from the storm knocked down two boulders onto the road. A single lane on the highway reopened the following afternoon with alternating traffic and it has remained that way since.

HDOT announced on Wednesday, April 22, that the lane closure will continue through late summer. The closure involves a 750-foot-long section of the highway.

A permanent rockfall protection system is being installed which will be 200,000 square feet and have a 500-foot impact fence at the base of the slope. Steel plates will protect the waterline, which serves the North Shore community, from rock impacts…
