Texas has regained its standing as the nation’s top state for Fortune 500 companies, taking back a crown that California claimed in 2024 and 2025, with Houston leading the state and tied for second among the nation’s major metro areas.
Texas is home to 57 companies on the 2026 edition of the annual ranking, released June 5. These collectively brought in about $2.8 trillion in total revenue last year. California has 56 companies on this year’s list, by contrast, with total revenue of roughly $2.7 trillion.
Fortune noted that while Texas’s roster of Fortune 500 companies includes longtime list staples, including energy giant Exxon, ranked No. 9, the state has also added three new Fortune 500 headquarters since last year.
