A rainbow sea of jerseys has flooded the newly renovated Main Street Promenade in downtown Houston this past month. Houstonians and visitors from around the world have flocked to the street corridor, enjoying its amenities, eateries, and lively atmosphere while experiencing one of the city’s major infrastructure projects for its 2026 FIFA World Cup hosting.
A New Look for Main Street
Construction for the $17 million project commenced in June 2025, and was completed in May this year. Its initiative was to create a pedestrian-friendly, recreational space for locals and global visitors in a central location for the World Cup.
Prior to the renovation, Main Street was primarily a vehicle-dominated section of downtown Houston, with pricy parking. However in 2021, they launched the “More Space” project to temporarily close vehicles in Main Street, making it accessible only via walking or METRORail, in hopes of encouraging more foot traffic for struggling businesses during the COVID-19 quarantine.
With the World Cup renovation, they took that initiative and amplified it. Using the feedback from stakeholders and community members, in the renovation, they permanently prohibited vehicles in the area and expanded the square footage of sidewalk space, to make it more pedestrian-friendly and accessible.
