Man arrested at Brownsville bridge in connection to murder of Harris County boy

BROWNSVILLE, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Cameron County deputies arrested a man Monday at the Gateway International Bridge who was wanted for the capital murder of a 12-year-old Houston boy.

Rivera is accused in the death of Carlos Fernandez on March 4 when he fired shots into an apartment building striking Fernandez, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Sheriff Gonzalez said Rivera was in a relationship with the victim’s mother and is the father of two of her children.

Shortly after the shooting, Rivera fled the area but was detained by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Texas-Mexico border. He was taken into custody by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department on Monday.

Rivera was transported to the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center.

Harris County was notified of Rivera’s arrest at the bridge and detention at the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center.

Additionally, Rivera’s mother Alva Cornejo, 51 was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail for charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution.
